Test a child today!

----------

Today, most children in India go to school. Enrollment levels have seen a huge jump over the last decade, and today more than 95% of all children in the 6-14 age group are enrolled in school. Every Indian citizen pays 2% education cess to help finance primary education. Is our money helping to produce desired outcomes? Are children learning?

Use these simple tools ( Reading tools / Math tools ) to test a child, a group of children, a classroom or even a neighbourhood.

The process is simple. It needs a few minutes to prepare for testing and about ten minutes with each child.

----------

Preparation

----------
  • Print out the testing tools ( Reading / Math ), in the language that you plan to test in. ASER tools are available in 16 Indian languages and in English. Each tool is 2 pages long (one sheet of paper, printed on both sides).
  • With the tools at hand, review the following documents: Overview of the testing process ( here ) (less than one page), and How to test reading ( English /  Hindi ) and arithmetic ( English /  Hindi ) (less than 3 pages).
  • If you plan to record the results, you can print and use the test record format used by us ( English Format / Hindi Format ) or create your own format.
----------

Testing

  • The tools are meant to be used with children in the age group 5-16 years. These test basic reading and arithmetic skills.
----------
The objective is not to 'test' the child but to find out what he or she can do comfortably. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the child is relaxed and not under pressure to perform. Give her/him time to understand the questions and always be patient. Don't prompt, but if you feel the child is making a careless mistake, ask him/her to read or solve the question again.
